Courses and workshops
Photography is an art, and as such it must be a personal, unique interpretation of the way you see things. This is the thread that runs through everything I teach, both in the classroom and in the field.
Courses
Ansel Adams stressed the idea of photographic interpretation. He said that one of his shots, however admired as landscape photography, did not necessarily represent the subject he had photographed, but the emotions he felt before that view. In the darkroom he could choose greater or lesser contrast, deeper blacks, richer whites.
I believe a great photograph is the expression of what you feel while you are shooting. Today, with digital, we have enormous possibilities for interpreting an image. Personal interpretation is, in my view, the key to creating an image that stands apart from the others, an image that becomes personal.
My advice is not to get carried away by the thousand possibilities today's software offers. I started teaching around twenty years ago. In my courses I teach what the tools can do, but above all I teach how to use them to make the image personal.
Workshops
According to author Jon Levy, an adventure should have three qualities. It should be remarkable and worth telling, it should involve some risk, and it should foster personal growth.
A workshop, in my view, should not be only a moment to learn photographic techniques, but an adventure. I run street and landscape photography workshops.
